Scholarships and Prizes

  • 2003 Awarded a University of Tasmania exchange scholarship to study theoretical Physics and Mathematics at the University of California Santa Barbara, California.
  • 2004 Awarded the University of Tasmania Radio Astronomy Honour Scholarship to complete an Honours degree in Astrophysics.
  • 2005 Awarded a Dean's citation for achieving a Dean citation in each year of study and a gaining a 1st class honours.
  • 2007 Awarded a Fellowship to attend the 49th Summer School in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Massachusetts.
  • 2009 Awarded the industry sponsored Young Tasmanian of the Year - Environment Award. (See Image to right)

Outreach Activities

Since the beginning of his research career, Jan has actively participated in public education and outreach activities. Jan has taken part University and CSIRO sponsored science education programs and the University of the Third Age (U3A). He has helped to communicate physics, oceanography and climate science to a range of audiences, including early childhood, secondary and adult.
